Day 2: Ponce and Our First Performance

Hello from Ponce, Puerto Rico!

Today was a very cool day, filled with all kinds of music, learning, and fun. To start out the day, we all had breakfast at the in-house coffee shop at the Ramada...

The breakfast was tasty and the coffee was great. It brings back some memories of our trip to the coffee plantation in Costa Rica!

After breakfast, we got together and we took a short tour of downtown Ponce. We were able to see lots of impressive sites like The Catedral de Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe, Instituto de Musica Juan Morel Campos, City Hall, Parque de Bombas (where we performed), and the market place.

The Catedral de Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe

Above is the City Hall, where we were able to get a short tour. The guide told us lots of interesting facts including the history of Ponce's founder, Ponce de Leon of Spain!

Ponce's local music school
The music school in Ponce is a place where students, regardless of economic means are able to go for music lessons. What a great opportunity for the local citizens!

After our tour of Ponce, we set up for our first performance in Puerto Rico at the Parque de Bombas. The Parque de Bombas is an old firestation that is set up with exhibits and old pictures. It was quite beautiful.

The performance was wonderful! We were actually graced with the presence of Ponce's mayor!!! ANDDD we will be in Ponce's morning newspaper as well as their evening news on TV!! The performance was very exciting and many people stopped to watch and listen.

Soon to come will be pictures with the mayor! Check back on tomorrow's post! After our performance at the Parque de Bombas, we all went to the local market place where their were lots of local street vendors, clothing stores, general stores, etc. This was a cool place that is filled with people walking and making purchases. How fun?!

Following our market visit, we had the privilege of touring the Museo de Arte de Ponce (Ponce Art Museum). This was simply amazing. Our tour guide was incredibly knowledgeable and articulate. He was able to tell us cool back-stories for all of the artwork. Also, he was able to guide us to the key parts of the art, so that we would better understand the meaning of the piece. The museum is one of the most well-respected art museums in the entire world!

When we finished with the art museum, we drove to the top of a nearby mountain, where we were able to see a castle and the famous cross. Also, there was an amazing view of the city from the top of the mountain!

Overall, the day was wonderful. It was filled to the brim with a lot of memorable moments. Tomorrow, we will rise early to head to Fajardo! Check back for more tomorrow!!!

Hasta Luego!,
